PROJECTPLAN™

Assessment, Design and Tailored Project Definition for

Low-Risk / High-Impact Goal-Driven Analytic Implementation

YOU WOULDN’T LAUNCH A ROCKET WITHOUT A MISSION PLAN…

Model Level Focus

Model Level Focus

Yet, the vast majority of advanced analytic modeling projects are deployed without having assessed the organizational culture, experience, resources, environment, situation and motivations. These projects are then launched blindly — without an overarching project plan. These expensive analytic implementations then rarely arrive at measurable impact or sustained adoption of the resulting model. Organizations spend immeasurable amounts on software, infrastructure and payroll to build what are often technically accurate models …that fail or fall short at the execution level. So, the models do typically get off the launch pad, but then wander aimlessly into an abyss. The Modeling Agency’s ProjectPlan™ overlays the critical strategic implementation framework onto the common tactical model development effort. Without this framework, analytic teams will build models that reveal some interesting insights… but the insights rarely mesh with operational realities, align with organizational objectives, or express results in terms that motivate leadership.

PLAN FOR ACTION, CONFIRM IMPACT, AND ADOPT THE WINNER

Nearly all analytic firms, including TMA, offer a service to accept client data and return with model scores or deployed multipliers from an analytic development effort. That limited service encompasses less than two of six overall phases of a complete modeling process implementation: the data preparation component of the Prepare and Model phases. ProjectPlan™ complements the tactical model implementation with the Assess, Plan and Validate phases to ensure a holistic consideration of risks, opportunities and resourcess:

TMA’s Modeling Practice Framework™

Developing models without the Plan phase for commercial project development is like building a home without blueprints. As well, skipping the Validate phase will greatly increase the risk that the model’s performance will not hold up on deployment — or be operationable and sustainable. And as TMA’s senior consultant and training director, Tony Rathburn warns his course participants, “A failed model or project is not your worst outcome. Adopting a failed project and taking it live is your worst outcome!” Undertaking these three phases around a tactical model build will minimize risk and surprise while maximizing impact with residual benefit.

WHAT DOES PROJECTPLAN™ ALLOW YOU TO ACCOMPLISH?

When ProjectPlan™ supplements a standard analytic model build, you will:

  • Directly hit organizational analytic goals with specific metrics expressed in terms that the organization can apply, measure and interpret
  • Deploy validated models that win challenger tests and avoid common, elusive pitfalls like model memorization and leakage
  • Reduce risk by identifying potential performance inhibitors and deployment barriers in advance of model development
  • Avoid the dead-ends of implementing before resolving cultural and “so-what” issues of adoption
  • Substantially increase performance and impact by aligning model development to organizational priorities and data preparation to resource conditions and project type
  • Shift mindset from a limited technology focus to one of organizational transformation to evolve from gut-level decisioning to data-driven

SERVICE DETAILS

Requirements

  • ProjectPlan™ is not a stand-alone service. ProjectPlan™ is an essential strategic append to a tactical model build. To apply ProjectPlan™, a model build should be developed collaboratively with TMA, or outsourced from TMA’s modeling menu.

Timeframe

  • ProjectPlan™ is a highly collaborative service. On-time delivery depends upon client responsiveness. Assuming full customer participation and timely fulfillment of resource requests, the Plan phase will complete within four weeks of team interviews and resource evaluation.  The Validate phase provides testing and measurement oversight typically over a two-week timeframe.  The total time for these three phases should then be added to the actual model build timeframe as provided in TMA’s modeling menu. All five Phases are typically completed within two months.
  • This timeframe will exceed what other vendors will quote for outsourced model development. However, three additional critical process phases will be implemented in a way to maximize execution and adoption at the project level, substantially increase goal-oriented impact, and establish the skills of your team to maintain the resulting model.

Responsibilities

  • Team members should prioritize for meeting participation, have resources readily available, and cycle promptly on TMA requests during the term of the engagement. After an initial planning call, a draft agenda will be proposed to schedule the functional team meetings.

Price

Value

      • The savings of not attempting doomed implementations that can be confidently disqualified in advance
      • The savings from not risking tactical model development effort and expense to have the model fail at the project level, or fall well short of its potential
      • The savings of effort, time and reputation from not engaging a seemingly good model in the training stage that falls apart in the execution stage when taken live
      • The gains realized when a validated model performs against established performance metrics or cost-benefit benchmarks and generates clearly measurable results on each deployment
      • The residual gains that compound when your internal team manages, monitors and maintains the resulting model

Deliverables

      • Preparatory phone meetings
      • Remote assessment meetings and resource identification and collection over a two-week timeframe for the Assess phase
      • Analysis of resources amassed in the Assess phase and development of the project definition in the Plan phase
      • Model testing and validation coaching in the Validate phase
      • Process and template finalization and summary report preparation
      • ProjectPlan™ report of findings, recommendations process guide, data transformation templates and modeling summaries
      • Project findings and executive presentation by web conference
