Guidance and results for the data-rich, yet information-poor.

IBM CEO Sees a Future Where All Decisions are Data Driven

19112780.thbZDNet recently covered the IBM Interconnect 2013 Event in Singapore. IBM CEO Ginni Rometty used the keynote speech to express her belief that all future business decisions will be data-driven.

Rometty said every single decision made in an organization, whether it was to buy another company or keep an employee, would be driven by the information powered from big data analysis.

“All of us are going to have more complex decisions to make in a much more complex environment. Those that choose to be a smarter enterprise will get the chance, I think, to make the right decisions, and it will be the basis of competitive advantage,” she said.

Rometty cited a couple of different examples, from using business intelligence to build better products to marketing specific plans directly to individuals based on cell phone usage patterns.

Of course, we’re not there yet. Most businesses are still in the dark when it comes to using data analytics in intelligent, effective ways.

In order to get to the “smart company future” that Rometty envisions, organizations will first have to move past the “magical thinking” which assumes that brilliant insights come after someone dumps a bunch of data into an algorithm.

Instead, that data must be carefully prepped and aimed at a specific target. Then, and only then, will it be capable of producing “smart” results.

How does an organization embark on the road which leads to these kinds of results? It all starts with training in proper data analytics strategies.
